afs: AI Food Scanner

Scan it. See what’s inside.

afs reads the ingredients of a packaged food and shows what’s in it: a Clean Score from 0 to 100, where 100 is the cleanest, with each flagged ingredient named.

Each flagged ingredient, by name

afs checks the ingredients for four things. The more flagged ingredients a product has, the lower its Clean Score.

Sample ingredient list

In afs, tap a flagged ingredient to read why it’s flagged.

Seed oils
Such as soybean, canola, corn and sunflower oil.
Synthetic emulsifiers
Such as mono- and diglycerides and polysorbate 80.
Gums
Such as carrageenan, guar gum and xanthan gum.
Other additives
Some colors, preservatives and sweeteners, such as Red 40, TBHQ and aspartame.

How it works

  1. The afs camera pointed at the barcode of a sample cracker box, with a switch between Barcode and Ingredient List and a button to search by name instead.

Scan the barcode, or the ingredient list

Point the camera at the barcode. No barcode, or an unknown one? Scan the ingredient list instead: afs reads the label on your iPhone, and the photo isn’t uploaded. You can also search for a product by name.

  2. What afs flagged in the sample crackers, group by group: soybean oil under seed oils, then mono- and diglycerides and soy lecithin under synthetic emulsifiers, each with a line on why.

See the score and what’s flagged

A Clean Score from 0 to 100, where 100 is the cleanest, with each seed oil, emulsifier, gum and additive afs found, by name, and why afs flags it.

  3. A cleaner pick in the same category: sample seed and grain crackers scoring 92, with no seed oils and no synthetic emulsifiers. Two more picks are shown with a subscription.

    Find a cleaner pick

When afs knows a cleaner product in the same category, the result shows it, with what makes it cleaner.

Privacy

  • No account is needed to scan. Your scans and history are kept on your iPhone.
  • A photo of a label is read on your iPhone and isn’t uploaded.
  • To check a product, afs sends its barcode or its ingredient text. Ingredient names afs hasn’t seen before are classified automatically by an AI service, through afs’s server. Only the ingredient text is sent for this, with no name, account or device id.
  • A family’s shared scans are kept for the family on servers in the EU.
  • afs asks before it sends any usage data, and you can change your answer in Settings. No ads, and no tracking across other companies’ apps and websites.
  • This website loads nothing from other companies: no analytics, no ads, no outside fonts or scripts. Its own small script only runs the animations, and it sends nothing anywhere.

Good to know

afs is for information only and isn’t medical advice. Talk to your doctor or a registered dietitian before making changes for a health condition, an allergy or a pregnancy.

afs doesn’t check allergens. Always read the allergen statement on the pack.

The Clean Score counts flagged ingredients. It doesn’t measure sugar, salt, fat, calories or portion size, and its bands are afs’s own scale. A product’s record can be incomplete or out of date, so check the pack.
