afs terms of use
1. These terms and Apple's licence
afs is licensed to you under Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement (the Standard EULA). These terms add the rules for using afs and the services behind it. If the two differ about the licence of the app itself, the Standard EULA applies. By using afs you accept both. Our privacy policy says what data afs uses and why.
2. What afs does
afs reads the ingredient list of a packaged food, from its barcode, a photo of the label or a list you type, and checks each ingredient against our list of seed oils, synthetic emulsifiers, gums and other additives. It shows what it flagged, a Clean Score from 0 to 100 (100 means none of the ingredients on our list were found) and, where it has them, products in the same category that score higher.
3. What afs is not: reliance limits
Please read this section. It is the most important one.
- afs is not medical advice. It doesn't diagnose, treat or prevent any condition, and it doesn't know your health, your diet or your family's needs. For any health or diet question, talk to a doctor or a registered dietitian.
- Product data can be incomplete or wrong. Our product information comes from public databases, from ingredient lists other people scanned and from our own work. Makers change recipes, labels are misprinted, a scan can misread a word, and an unusual ingredient name can be classified wrongly. An ingredient afs could not check yet is marked so on the result, and its score can change once it is reviewed.
- Check the pack. The ingredient list printed on the product in your hand is the one that counts. When afs and the pack disagree, trust the pack.
- Allergens are not checked. afs doesn't look for allergens or intolerances and never tells you a product is free of one. Don't use afs to decide whether a food is suitable for someone with an allergy, an intolerance or a medical diet.
- The Clean Score is our rating, not a safety verdict. It reflects only how many ingredients from our list a product contains. A high score doesn't mean a product is safe or healthy for you, and a low score doesn't mean it is unsafe. The score says nothing about nutrition, calories, quantities or how a food was produced.
- Suggestions are suggestions. The products afs shows in their place are picked by category and score only; check their packs too.
4. Free scans and subscriptions
- Free scans. Each iPhone gets 3 free scans. The count stays on the iPhone and is not reset by "Delete my data", so the free scans are not given back.
- Subscriptions. afs offers a Yearly and a Monthly auto-renewing subscription, sold by Apple. The price, the period and any free trial are shown on the purchase button and by the App Store before you buy, and payment is charged to your Apple Account when you confirm the purchase or, with a free trial, when the trial ends.
- Free trial. When Apple offers your Apple Account a free trial, the subscription starts after it unless you cancel before it ends. Apple decides who is eligible, usually once per Apple Account.
- Renewal and cancelling. A subscription renews automatically unless you cancel it at least 24 hours before the end of the current period, and your Apple Account is charged for the renewal within the 24 hours before the period ends. Cancel or change your plan in afs at Settings › Cancel subscription, which opens Apple's subscription screen, or in iOS Settings. Deleting afs, using "Delete my data" or deleting your account does not cancel a subscription.
- Refunds are handled by Apple (reportaproblem.apple.com), not by us.
- Family Sharing. Both subscriptions can be shared with up to 5 other people in your Apple family through Apple Family Sharing. Being in a family in afs does not give anyone a subscription, and a subscription does not need an afs family.
5. Family sharing and your account
- Family sharing is optional and free. It needs a family account, made with Sign in with Apple. You must be 13 or older (or the age of digital consent where you live, if higher) to have one.
- The person who starts a family is its owner. Only the owner invites people, removes them and renames the family. A family has at most 6 people. Invite only people you know; each invite works once and for 7 days.
- Everyone in a family sees the family's name, plan name and goal, every member's name, and every scan shared with it. Your name is the one Apple shared or the one you typed; choose a name you are happy for your family to see.
- When you leave a family, the scans you shared stay with it, shown as "a former member". When the owner closes a family, everyone's scans stay only on their own iPhones. "Delete account" in Settings › Account deletes your account and the scans you shared (our privacy policy, §6).
- If you stop using Sign in with Apple for afs in your iPhone's Settings, afs signs you out and asks our servers to delete your family account and the scans you shared the next time it opens on your iPhone, and asks again each time it opens until they confirm, as "Delete account" does; if you own the family, it passes to the member who joined first, or closes if no one else is in it. If you delete your Apple Account, write to us and we will delete them (our privacy policy, §6).
6. Using afs fairly
- Type only ingredient lists into the ingredient field, never personal information.
- Don't misuse our servers: no automated or bulk requests, and no attempts to get around the free-scan limit, the rate limits or our security. Product data from Open Food Facts stays under its own licences (Settings › Credits).
- Don't use a family's name or plan name, or your own name, for anything unlawful, offensive or misleading.
- We may suspend access for anyone who breaks these rules or puts the service or other people at risk.
7. Product data and our work
- Product information is credited in afs under Settings › Credits. We can correct, change or remove product information at any time. Ingredient text you scan for a product we don't know may be kept, without anything that identifies you, to give the next person a result (our privacy policy, §2).
- Our list of flagged ingredients, our explanations, the way we score and the app's design are ours. Our ingredient dictionary also draws on Open Food Facts' public data, which stays under its own licences (Settings › Credits). Product and brand names belong to their owners; afs is not affiliated with any brand.
8. Changes and availability
We improve afs over time and may change or end features. We aim to keep the service running but can't promise it will always be available or free of errors. When we change these terms we update the date at the top, and for a significant change we tell you in the app or in an app update's notes before it applies. These terms were first written on 27 October 2026 and take effect on 2 November 2026.
9. Our responsibility
As far as the law allows, afs is provided "as is", without promises that it fits a particular purpose or that its information is complete or correct (§3). Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, such as for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud. If you are a consumer in the European Union, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, you keep every right that the law of your country gives you, and these terms do not take any of them away.
10. Apple
These terms are between you and us, not Apple. Apple is not responsible for afs or its content, its maintenance and support, any warranty claim beyond what the Standard EULA provides, any claim about afs (including product liability, legal or regulatory compliance, and consumer protection claims), or any claim that afs infringes someone's intellectual property. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you.
11. Ending
You can stop using afs at any time: delete the app, and if you have a family account, delete it first in Settings › Account. These terms end for you if you break them seriously. Sections 3, 7, 9 and 10 continue after they end.
12. Law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction over any dispute, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. If you are a consumer, you can also bring a claim in the courts of the country where you live, under its mandatory consumer law.
